Join us on The Path: A Journey through the Bible

By the Rev. Kate Wesch

The Bible is referred to in literature, movies, and everyday expressions. But the truth is, many Episcopalians aren’t all that familiar with the Bible. Opening a Bible for the first time can be intimidating. Where does one begin?

Do you want to know more about the Bible? Don’t know where to start? Join us on The Path this year as we explore the Bible together. The Path is the story of the Bible, excerpted from the New Revised Standard Version and condensed so that is it clear and easy to read. You can journey from one Bible story to the next and see how they connect. The Path shows you the major landmarks of the Bible’s story and will increase your understanding of the Bible. Follow the path of God’s love all the way from the beginning to the end, from Adam’s creation to John’s revelation.

It is my hope that by next summer, every single person at St. John the Baptist will have a deeper understanding and appreciation for holy scripture.

We are primarily engaging with The Path in two ways. First, the Sunday morning forums from 9:15-10:00 a.m. is focused on The Path. And second, we have gotten permission and enthusiastic support from Bishop Greg Rickel to change the lectionary, that is the appointed scripture readings each week, to include a reading from The Path each Sunday. That means you will have an opportunity like never before! Simply by attending church, you will hear the Bible preached chronologically from beginning to end, from Creation to Revelation. THIS IS SO EXCITING!!!

To get the most out of The Path you will come to church each Sunday having read (or listened to) a short chapter of the book, prepared to discuss the reading and the sermon at the forum, with your friends at coffee hour, or while going about your Sunday duties.

The Path starts on September 15, 2019 and runs weekly for much of the 2019-2020 program year. We will be taking a break during Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter.

You may purchase a copy of The Path from the church office. Suggested donation is $15. It is also available on Kindle and audio book through Amazon.

Family Story Time

By Emily Tanis-Likkel, Famly Life Minister

I have looked through many Children’s Bibles. I look for artwork that opens the imagination as well as storytelling that is compelling, accessible and provokes a sense of wonder in all ages. I was delighted to discover that the companion storybook Bible to The Path: A Journey through the Bible, checks all those boxes.

Join the families of St. John’s in readingThe Path: Family Storybook: A Journey Through the Bible for Families by Lindsay Hardin Freeman and Melody Wilson Shobe. These Storybook Bibles will be available at a suggested donation of $10 a copy at coffee hour in the coming weeks.

The authors write: “This book, like the Bible, is a collection of the stories that our ancestors told their children and grandchildren around the fire and when they tucked their little ones into bed each night. These are the memories that kept them strong when they were scared and gave them reason to celebrate when they remembered the happy times.”

As the congregation studies and reflects on the Bible stories in their condensed version found in The Path: A Journey Through the Bible, families with children of all ages can learn and wonder about these stories together using this excellent companion storybook Bible.  Grab a copy, cozy up and have a family story time together.
