The Festival of Christmas Lessons and Carols was first held on Christmas Eve 1918. It was planned by Eric Milner-White, who at the age of thirty-four had just been appointed Dean of King’s College after his experience as an army chaplain convinced him that the Church of England needed more imaginative worship. It was an adaptation of a similar service that had been written for the cathedral at Truro in 1880.
On December 29, the fifth day of Christmas, we gather for this traditional liturgy as we celebrate David Ruberg’s ministry in our midst these past fifteen years. A festive reception and retirement party follow in the Parish Hall. You are invited to bring cards of thanksgiving for David as well as a beverage to share if you are so inclined. As is our custom for long-time staff members at St. John’s, we are collecting a “purse” for David as he makes this transition into retirement. If you would like to make a donation, please write a check and note that it is for “David’s purse” in the memo line.
