The Path: A Journey Through the Bible

Chapter Four: Joseph Had a Dream

How would you feel if your younger twin brother was favored by your mother and craftily nabbed your place as revered oldest brother, all for a helping of lentil stew? If that isn’t enough, Jacob, the youngest, who now has the upper hand tricks their father in a case of mistaken identity involving a goat skin. As the story continues, Jacob has a vivid dream about angels, and wrestles with God, ending up with a hip injury.

Eventually we come to Joseph, who was Jacob’s favorite son. You’d think this family would learn that having favorites doesn’t play out well. Predictably, Joseph is despised by his brothers. They sell him into slavery but because Joseph can interpret dreams his life takes a turn for the better that in the end benefits his brothers, too. It’s a miracle that the brothers not only speak to each other again but reconcile. Joseph’s journey with God, like ours, involves a lot of ups and downs but God is with him all the way. In what ways is God present in your life? Who in your life is in need of forgiveness and mercy? We will discuss this and more in class.
