Ministry & Worship @ St. John the Baptist: Our Next Normal, Fall 2020

Beginning Sunday, September 13th, 2020

9:00 AM Parking Lot Church over the Radio (In person! In your car!)

10:00-10:45 AM Adult Forum via Zoom (Beginning Sept 20th)

11:15 AM Live Stream Service on YouTube (From home! On your couch!)

I know you have been waiting for this…. SJB’s next normal. What does that mean?!? It means we are embracing this COVID-time as an opportunity to try new things, to gather safely in creative ways, and to challenge ourselves in staying connected to God and one another.

September 13 Fall Kick Off at 9:00 AM in the Parking Lot

Our Annual Fall Kick Off may not look the same, but we are having it! On September 13th, we will gather in the Parking Lot. Instead of a cookout with a bouncy house, this year we will have Parking Lot Church over the radio!!! Isn’t that exciting?

To make our first parking lot service extra special, you are invited to decorate your car in celebration and anticipation of a new program year. Stick on some balloons, signs, streamers, or whatever you have on hand. 2020 has taught us that we need to celebrate anything we can. Let’s celebrate being together, let’s wave and honk and worship together.

The service will take place in the high school parking lot and broadcast at 9:00AM. Tune your car or portable radio to the frequency designated that morning and download a bulletin from your Friday e-news or the SJB website:

Do you have an iPad or laptop you’ve been using to stay connected to the St. John’s community? You are invited to bring it along, for a “Blessing of the Devices.” Kids, teens and teachers are also invited to bring an item to be blessed, such as a digital device, notebook or backpack, for a back to school blessing. Kids of all ages can enjoy “Parking Lot Church Activity Bags” at our Fall Kick Off. It will be so good to see one another on September 13!

September 20 & Beyond…

Each Sunday, beginning September 20th, our Sunday line up will include two opportunities for worship as well as formation for all ages. You can choose to participate in the ways that work best for your household.

9:00AM, we will have drive-in church in the parking lot, transmitted over a low frequency radio signal. Who should come to this service? Anyone who wants to get up and go to church. You will remain inside your vehicle the entire time. We will have activity bags for children. This is an opportunity to see your church friends from a safe distance while having an opportunity to gather communally for prayer.

10:00-10:45AM, you can participate in the Sunday Forum via zoom from your computer or telephone at home. This fall, we are finishing up The Path.

Also, 10:00-10:45AM, the Kidz Club meets over zoom. This is open to any child of Sunday School age who wishes to participate.

11:15AM, a Worship Team of ten people will lead the congregation in worship from the sanctuary. Until we are in Phase 3, no parishioners will be allowed to gather in person for this service. This service will be live streamed to YouTube and the link will be posted to Facebook and the church website later.

We Need Volunteers For:

9:00 AM Parking Lot Church Service

Parking & Safety Team: Volunteers for this team will be asked to arrive by 8:30AM. This weekly team of 2-4 people will greet parishioners as they pull into the drive from a distance. They will direct traffic, answer questions, assist with radios and bulletins.

Radio Tech Support: We need one person each week to arrive by 8:30AM to set up the radio transmitter and assist Rev. Kate. It would be ideal to have several people trained to do this.

Lector & Intercessor: Each week, we will need one person to arrive by 8:45AM to serve as Lector and Intercessor. This person will read the Old Testament, lead the psalm, read the New Testament, and lead the Prayers of the People.

11:15 AM Live Stream Church Service

Live Streaming Tech Support: We need volunteers who are tech savvy and willing to learn how to operate multiple cameras, the sound board, and computers to live stream our Sunday morning service. Training will be provided. Each week, one person will need to arrive by 10:45AM to set up and run the equipment from the new live streaming station in the choir loft.

Worship Team Members: As we make the switch from pre-recording to live streaming, we are forming a couple of worship teams. Each team is comprised of no more than seven people and will serve for two Sundays in a row followed by two Sundays off. The seven people will take turns serving as acolytes, lectors, intercessor, and congregation members. Due to state and diocesan requirements at this time, we may not exceed ten people in the building at one time.

Please prayerfully consider whether or not you are being called to step into any of these volunteer roles at this time to help lead our community. If you have questions, please ask!
